Face Perception: Broken into Parts
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent study has shown that, using transcranial magnetic stimulation to stimulate an area of the visual cortex, the perception of face parts can be selectively and reversibly disrupted, while the perception of their arrangement is spared.

Understanding face perception by means of prosopagnosia and neuroimaging.
Understanding the human neuro-anatomy of face recognition is a long-standing goal of Cognitive Neuroscience. Studies of patients with face recognition impairment following brain damage (i.e., acquired prosopagnosia) have revealed the specificity of face recognition, the importance and nature of holistic/configural perception of individual faces, and the distribution of this function in the vent...
متن کاملRapid adaptation of the m170 response: importance of face parts.
Face perception is often characterized as depending on configural, rather than part-based, processing. Here we examined the relative contributions of configuration and parts to early "face-selective" processing at the M170, a magnetoencephalographic response approximately 170 ms after stimulus onset, using adaptation. Previously (Harris and Nakayama 2007), we showed that rapid successive presen...
متن کاملDisrupting perceptual grouping of face parts impairs holistic face processing
Face perception is widely believed to involve integration of facial features into a holistic perceptual unit, but the mechanisms underlying this integration are relatively unknown. We examined whether perceptual grouping cues influence a classic marker of holistic face perception, the "composite-face effect." Participants made same-different judgments about a cued part of sequentially presented...
متن کاملHolistic Face Categorization in Higher Order Visual Areas of the Normal and Prosopagnosic Brain: Toward a Non-Hierarchical View of Face Perception
How a visual stimulus is initially categorized as a face in a network of human brain areas remains largely unclear. Hierarchical neuro-computational models of face perception assume that the visual stimulus is first decomposed in local parts in lower order visual areas. These parts would then be combined into a global representation in higher order face-sensitive areas of the occipito-temporal ...
متن کاملPerception of Face Parts and Face Configurations: An fMRI Study
fMRI studies have reported three regions in human ventral visual cortex that respond selectively to faces: the occipital face area (OFA), the fusiform face area (FFA), and a face-selective region in the superior temporal sulcus (fSTS). Here, we asked whether these areas respond to two first-order aspects of the face argued to be important for face perception, face parts (eyes, nose, and mouth),...
